Wardrobe Staple

Whether you’re a handbag fanatic or an accessories minimalist, the everyday handbag is a wardrobe staple... and probably the hardest working item in your wardrobe! So it's important to find one that's affordable & right for you. Here are my tips for finding the perfect handbag.

  • Look for a handbag that expresses your unique personal style. If your style is classic, a hobo handbag looks great with simple chic outfits or if your style is romantic a clutch adds a feminine flair to your outfit.
  • Choose a colour that complements your wardrobe. A neutral handbag, think navy or tan, works back with brighter clothing or a handbag in a pop of colour, think pink or red, works well with a monochrome wardrobe.

  • The size of the bag should work in harmony with your silhouette. A larger bag can overwhelm a petite frame or a small bag can be lost on a taller frame.
  • The most flattering handbag shape is one that is opposite to your body, if you are curvy consider a more angular handbag or if have an athletic figure look for more rounded styles.
  • It's important to think about the length of the handbag; where you hold your handbag visually draws attention to that area. If you want your waist to be the focus wear your handbag on your shoulder or if you want to highlight your legs hold the bag low.

Wardrobe Staple

The white shirt, it's a wardrobe staple that will never go out of style. But how to update the classic silhouette? Take inspiration from the concrete catwalk...

Try tying a knot at the front,

or at the back.

Consider tying it off the shoulder,

or wrapping it at the front.

Tricky Trend

Velvet is set to be one of the biggest trends this coming winter, it’s luxurious and sophisticated but worn incorrectly, it can look matronly or even like you are going to fancy dress party! So how to wear this tricky trend & add a touch of glam to your wardrobe?

  • Simple silhouettes are key; think blazer, slip dress or skirt.
  • Keep your outfit looking effortless, only wear one velvet piece at a time.
  • Balance the luxe feel of velvet with raw fabrics like denim or leather.
  • Consider pairing velvet with contrasting textures; think cashmere knits and jersey tops or silk blouses and satin shirts.
  • Keep accessories simple as velvet makes enough of a statement.
  • As always, confidence will be essential!

Update Your Look

White shoes, especially sneakers, have been trending for the past few seasons and luckily, they are no longer considered trashy as they were in the 80s. This season you’ll find them in every shoe silhouette, from sandals to stilettos or block heels to brogues, they are the perfect way to update your look.

Wardrobe Staple

The hat, not only does it provides protection from the sun and cover up bad hair days, it’s also the ultimate summer accessory! There is such a vast range to choose from this season, think…

Wide Brim Straw Hats

Boater Hats

Man Style Hats

Bucket Hats

Caps

With so many options in store this summer season, all you have to do is choose a style that compliments your face shape & complexion!

Tricky Trend

Ruffles are still trending but how to pull off the flounce and look like an adult, not your daughter? It’s all about finding the right balance.

Consider the colour of the garment, modern neutrals or prints keep the silhouette looking fresh... think khaki or navy and stripes or gingham.

stylestaples

Think about your fabric choice, a dramatic or structured ruffle creates a more sophisticated look.

stylestaples

Pair the ruffle back with simple or androgynous elements, denim and leather instantly dress down or toughen up a pretty look.

stylestaples

Let the ruffle be the statement and minimise accessories.

As always, confidence will be key!

Buy Less, Think More

When I'm in a client’s wardrobe, I often suggest they think about the Jil Sander quote ‘buy less, think more’. Needless to say, I get mixed reactions! I’m not suggesting they should have a minimalist wardrobe or to stop shopping, I’m asking them to put more thought into what they are purchasing to create a functioning wardrobe, one that is well curated to their suit lifestyle and individual personal style. It’s about having a wardrobe that exclusively holds clothes and accessories that add value to their wardrobe as a whole.

I understand it can sound a little overwhelming a first but it will ultimately save you time, money and it will be easier to create a variety of outfits! So before making that next purchase consider the following,

  • Do I already have something similar?
  • Will this work with other pieces in my wardrobe?
  • Can I wear this in different seasons?
  • Does this suit my personal style?
  • Do I really love it?

Fashion Week

With all things 90s trending it seems the stirrup pant is making a comeback too. They were noticeable on the Fall 2016 catwalk collections of Balenciaga & Marni and just a season later fashionistas are wearing them on the streets. Will we see them in stores for Winter 2017? Only time will tell!

Wardrobe Staple

The denim jean, it's a worldwide wardrobe staple and with each season the styling gradually changes. During the recent Spring Summer 2017 Fashion Weeks it became obvious denim trends are all about the details at the hem, there was everything from asymmetrical to frayed and cropped to exaggerated. It’s the subtle tweaking of a jean that can update your entire outfit. If you're not sure about the new look, try a bit of DIY with an old pair of jeans before investing your fashion funds!

Wicker, raffia and straw bags in all shapes & sizes appear to be the new ‘it bag’ among the street style fashionistas. The larger baskets are comfortable & perfect for carrying loads of things, whereas the smaller bags create a more relaxed look for the day. The best news about this trend is you probably already have one in your wardrobe!

Tricky Trend

As you would know by now, I love watching the Fashion Week collections. They are full of outfit & styling inspiration but most importantly I see the latest fads. This as an essential part of my job, as it gives me the ability to advise clients on when to save & when to splurge and how to interpret fashion so they look on trend, not like a fashion faux pas!

The latest trend to appear on the catwalk is the fruit print. It may sound a little over the top but these prints are fun, colourful and perfect for warmer weather.

So how to inject this trend into your wardrobe?

Consider wearing a fruit print head to toe, pull the look together with simple accessories.

stylestaples

Try mixing prints but ensure they have a similar colour palette to create a considered look.

stylestaples

Pair your fruit print back with separates that match a colour from the print.

stylestaples

A fruit print paired with neutral separates can really make prints pop.

stylestaples

Opt for a top with a fruit placement print.

As always, try an accessory first!

Update Your Look

It's NYFW and as always there are plenty of amazing looks both on and off the catwalk. This season fashionistas on the street have opted for a more casual look, pairing statement pieces back with a wardrobe staple, the t-shirt. They range from basic to bold, but the stand out style is the graphic or logo t-shirt! The key to making this look chic, not childish, is choosing garments and accessories that work in harmony with the graphic, so think about the logos colours and attitude!

Update Your Look

Once upon a time fashion lived and died by the biggest runway trends. Now with the rise of social media and the acceptance of unique personal style, catwalk trends are more varied and offer a key theme with loads of choice! So let’s consider belts, they dominated the Spring 2016 catwalks but came in a selection of styles… There is something for everyone!

Skinny Knotted Belts

The past few seasons, dressing for comfort has been taken to a new level... it is now acceptable to wear your sleepwear for day wear.  The trend started a few years ago with 1920s Coco Chanel inspired pyjama style shirts, then recently on the Spring 16 catwalks designers presented an array of night gowns, silk robes, slinky camisoles and pyjama-style silk trousers.

The key to pulling off this trend is to make your outfit look intentional & not look like you’ve just rolled out of bed. So the right fit and fabric is essential, think classic shaped garments made from silk or satin in conservative colours and prints.

If you’re wearing a full pyjama look, opt for a heel, this will also allow the hem to fall flatteringly.

If you’re just wearing a pj top, style it as you would a silk shirt. Try rolling up the sleeves and team with jeans or a leather skirt.

If you’re wearing a silk slip or camisole, try layering it over t-shirts and turtlenecks for a dressed down daytime look.

If you’re wearing a long silk robe pair it wardrobe staples, think jeans and a t-shirt.

Tricky Trend

With new season stock arriving in store, you may have noticed the colour blush is back in fashion. It’s a sophisticated and elegant shade of pink but it can be tricky to wear. So how can you inject this colour into your wardrobe? The key is to understand your style personality.

If you have a casual style personality & crave comfort, then consider looking for garments with simple lines in soft fabrications and pair it back with denim.

If you have a classic style personality, look for simple yet chic pieces with a timeless quality and pair them back with your wardrobe staples.

If you have a romantic style personality, this trend is perfect for you, look for prints and patterns & fabrics and finishings that have a feminine feel.

If you have a natural style personality, look for pieces that create that easy, effortlessly casual look and pair them back with simple silhouettes.

If you have a dramatic style personality, look for bold pieces that make a strong statement.

As always, if you're not sure about a trend invest in an accessory first!

Tricky Trend

If you have been watching the concrete catwalk during the recent fashion weeks, you’ll have noticed many fashionistas have customised their denim, both jeans & jackets, with patches & brooches.

While it’s a youthful trend, there’s a certain element of nostalgia associated with it, think everything from punk rock to hippie denim. It’s also a great way to express your individuality and personal style too!

Will this tricky trend work for you?

Perhaps consider a cluster of brooches on your denim jacket.

stylestaples

Try running your patches vertically to visually create a longer leg line.

stylestaples

Use patches to create a considered outfit with complimentary colours & shapes.

stylestaples

Patches are a great way to express your personality or make a style statement.

Of course, you could always try an accessory first!

Style Rules

Recently I bought this skirt, I have been admiring them on the concrete catwalk but wasn’t ready to invest many of my fashion funds in the trend. The same day I was reading a magazine with a style rule that summed up the purchase for me!

‘Cheap, fast, good. You can only have two out of three.’ This rule suggests that when buying clothes, you can only ever have two of those attributes.

  1. If you make a quick (or fast) purchase that’s cheap, you’ll probably need to compromise on quality (good).
  2. If you buy a bargain, that’s quality, you’ll probably have to compromise on finding it fast.
  3. If you’re in a rush & need to buy something quickly but want good quality, then you’ll probably have to compromise on price!

This purchase for me was definitely number 2!

Textured fabrics have been trending for the past few seasons, so it's no surprise retailers have been quick to adopt lurex for the new season. The shimmering, shiny metallic thread is being used as a garment detail, think stripes or for those more adventurous a whole garment.

My tips for wearing this trend?

  • Wear only one lurex garment and keep the other garments classic, simple or neutral.
  • Look for cuts that suit your shape. Shiny fabrics will instantly draw attention to wear it is being worn, so wear it in an area you want to highlight.
  • Think about your accessories, a shiny outfit is best balanced with simple accessories.
  • As always try an accessory first, consider a lurex scarf.
  • And, confidence will be key!!

Spend, Save, Splurge

In the 1900s, the Oxford shoe was worn by men and boys for social occasions, now with all things androgynous trending, it has become a key footwear shape for women too. They are a chic alternative to sneakers and are the perfect wardrobe update to the ballet flat.

Most retailers have a version of the Oxford shoe, so before you buy a pair ask yourself...

  • Do they compliment your personal style?
  • Do you already have something similar?
  • Will they work back with three existing items in your wardrobe?

and then consider your budget...
