Knitwear as Scarf

Wearing a knit as a scarf has become a popular trend. It's also a great way to include the ‘third item rule’ in your look; an extra garment that you don't really need but adds another level to an outfit. And it will increase your knits cost per wear too.

It’s a trend that works for all style personalities; but unfortunately, not for body shapes with broad shoulders or fuller busts as it visually adds volume to the shoulders and torso creating an imbalanced silhouette. Careful styling is key for other body shapes too; here’s how.

  • Choose a knit in a colour that complements your complexion.

  • Consider the thickness and select a style that works in harmony with your body scale, think larger scale, chunkier knit.

  • Then opt for a contrast colour or textured knit to visually create definition.

  • Finally, style the scarf to highlight the areas of your body that make you feel good and draw attention away from the ones that make you feel less confident; see the images below for more.

Take inspiration from Christophe Lemaire's Fall collection, and style the body of a knit on your torso, ensuring it's proportioned in flattering thirds across the body and the hemline sits at the elbow to highlight a waist.

Styling a knit draped across your shoulders will balance a fuller lower half; creating diagonal lines with the hem is most flattering.

Try tonal texture styling the arms of the knit across your torso ensuring it's proportioned in flattering thirds across the body and the hemline sits to highlight a waist.
